What are your Favorite or Most Important Places on Dauphin Island

Modern mapping is concerned mainly with the spatial distribution of things for a purpose, but stops short of dealing with meanings. Space is abstract, geometrical and undifferentiated. Place, on the other hand, is about experience. Space is more abstract than place. “What begins as undifferentiated space becomes place as we get to know it better and endow it with value.”

By engaging in this mapping exercise you can contribute to the Inventory of important cultural locations within the Dauphin Island landscape. In this way you will help move the geographic process of mapping beyond the cold idea of “space” to a more cultural identity of the Island with regard to warm feelings for “place.” The tabulation of these mapping results for everyone that contributes will give us a better understanding for the different parts of the Dauphin Island community and its surrounding environments that mean something to all stakeholders.
